Transaction: Renew ID Card

Use this transaction to renew your ID card. 

Eligibility

  • If your last renewal was completed online, by phone or mail, you MUST renew in person at one of our customer service centers.
  • Renew online. Certain conditions may affect your eligibility.
  • Your address on file with DMV MUST be correct. USPS will not forward your license.
  • By law, you are required to notify DMV within 30 days of moving. You can review and change your address during the transaction.

Renewing at the Last Minute?

Please allow 15 days for your new license to arrive by mail. If there are 15 days or fewer remaining on your current driver's license, be sure to PRINT the official internet receipt at the end of the transaction. When carried with your current license, the receipt extends your current license for a maximum of 30 days.

What You'll Need

  • ID card renewal notice or ID card
  • Payment. Options include:
    • Credit card displaying the Discover, MasterCard, VISA or American Express logo
    • Debit card displaying the MasterCard or VISA logo
    • Bank and checking account information to allow DMV to electronically withdraw funds from your checking account
  • Print the internet receipt and carry it with you until you receive your new ID card.

More Information

REAL ID

If you choose to upgrade to a REAL ID at renewal, you must visit a DMV customer service center with certain documents. Please fill out your application online to get started. 

Effective May 7, 2025, the federal government will require you to present a REAL ID license, U.S. Passport or another form of approved identification to board a domestic flight or to access secure federal facilities.

Note: Effective immediately, some military bases may no longer accept standard driver's licenses which display "Federal Limits Apply." Please verify identification requirements before your visit.

Organ Donor

You may change your status on the Donor Registry without getting a new license at Donate Life Virginia.

Delivery

Please allow at least 15 DAYS to receive your license before contacting DMV.

ID Photograph         

DMV will use the photograph on your current ID. If you want a new photograph on your license, visit one of our customer service centers.

Voter Registration

With this transaction, you have an opportunity to apply to register to vote, or if already registered, change your voter registration address. If you are unsure of your voter registration status, you can check the Department of Elections before you begin. 

Blood Type Indicator

During this process you will have the opportunity to indicate your blood type on your ID card. If you previously indicated your blood type, you will have the opportunity to update or remove it from your credential.

Veteran Indicator

Virginia allows veterans to add an indicator to your ID card. If you are a veteran, you may apply online for a veteran indicator on your ID card.
